Laurier’s 2025 Alumni Awards of Excellence and Laurier Philanthropy Awards ceremony brought together alumni, donors, students, faculty and staff for an evening recognizing individuals and groups whose contributions continue to strengthen the university community. The event, held on Homecoming weekend, highlighted the impact of leadership, service and support across Laurier’s campuses.
In her remarks, Laurier's President & Vice-Chancellor Deborah MacLatchy underscored the broader significance of the gathering.
“Tonight's celebration is just one example of the important role that Laurier's Alumni Association plays in strengthening our university community.”
This year’s recipients were:
• Alumna of the Year: Alanah Jewell (BA ’19)
• Young Alumnus of the Year: Giovanni Giuga (BA ’17)
• Entrepreneurial Spirit Award: Shannon Ferguson (BA ’08)
• Award for Community Impact: Kaylee Perez (BA ’13)
• Award for Community Impact: Jeremy Wagner (MIPP ’17, PhD '25)
• Forever Golden Hawk Award: Pat Krajewski (DIP-BU ’89, MBA ’90);
• Laurier Philanthropy Award: Matthew Certosimo (BA ’88), the Graduate Students’ Association, and the Students’ Union.
• Honorary Alumna of the Year: Lynn Orth
• Student Alumnus of the Year: Valentine Adedeji
Pat Krajewski, recognized as a Forever Golden Hawk for her long-standing involvement with Laurier, reflected on the value of the university community.
“To be a part of the Laurier community means you're inspired. It means you're going to have experiences beyond what you just came here for. Lots of learning here goes on beyond the classroom.”
The awards also highlighted the essential role of philanthropy at Laurier. This year’s Philanthropy Award recipients were recognized for supporting student success, campus enhancements and initiatives that contribute to a strong academic and co-curricular experience for Laurier students.
The Alumni Awards of Excellence are presented annually to recognize significant contributions to the Laurier community. The awards are made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteer WLUAA board members.
Planning is underway for next year’s celebration, which will take place on May 28, 2026. Laurier is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Alumni Awards of Excellence. Alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members are encouraged to submit nominations for individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, service and impact.
