In April, your Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association celebrated the re-opening of Alumni Field on Laurier’s Waterloo campus. Together with students, university leaders and community members, we gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Improvements to the field include updated turf and seating, a press box, scoreboard and a centre-field gateway feature. The field has also been expanded to FIFA-regulation size, making it more suitable for soccer, rugby and lacrosse competitions. The enhancements were made possible thanks to donations, including significant support from your Alumni Association. Your alumni association is very proud of its longstanding history of philanthropy and mentorship.
We also hosted the 2023 Graduating Class Celebrations on both the Brantford and Waterloo campuses. It marked one of the first large events I’ve had the privilege of attending as president of the Alumni Association since I started in this volunteer role in September of 2022. Bursting at the seams with that purple and gold spirit, the celebrations were a nostalgic walk down memory lane for me and a beautiful send off for this year’s graduating class.
Celebration is something we do pretty well at Laurier, and this year’s Graduating Class Celebrations and the reopening of Alumni Field are both great examples of that. As the soon-to-be grads from the Class of 2023 joined together to mark the end of classes and the start of their bright futures, I was reminded of how special it is to be a Laurier alum – to be a part of the Laurier community, a community that now includes more than 120,000 alumni worldwide.
And being an alum has its perks. Your Alumni Association offers you a wide variety of events, as well as professional and personal development opportunities, which are often free. As a Laurier alum, you also qualify for services and benefits. We like to call them your “GradVantages.” The GradVantages program not only provides great benefits to you, it also allows us as alumni to support important initiatives on campus.
With summer just beginning, you might be interested to know of a new “GradVantage” that Laurier alumni are now eligible for: preferred rates on travel insurance with TD Insurance through our Laurier alumni benefits! Whether you’re flying solo, traveling with a partner or taking your whole family on vacation, explore the travel insurance options available to you with TD insurance and find the coverage that fits your plans before you begin your travels.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Homecoming 2023 – from Wednesday, Sept. 20 until Sunday, Sept. 24 on our Waterloo campus and on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Brantford!
